7/9 - Haiti's interim PM announces he has formally requested US military assistance to stabilize the country following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse.

What You Need To Know

On Wednesday morning, AlertsUSA subscribers were notified of a lockdown of the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti following the assassination of the nation's President, Jovenel Moïse. The President had been shot at 12 times and had his left eye gouged out.

According to interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph, Moïse was assassinated at his private home during a "highly coordinated attack by a highly trained and heavily armed group.” His wife, Martine, was severely injured in the attack and was evacuated to Miami, FL for specialized medical treatment.

Police in Haiti say a strike team of as many as 28 foreign mercenaries — consisting mainly of Colombians but including at least two American citizens — carried out the assassination.

The detained Americans were identified by Haitian officials as James Solages, age 35, and Joseph Vincent, age 55. Both reside in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area.

According to Haitian National Police Chief Leon Charles, Foreigners came to our country to kill the president.

Haiti's ambassador to the US, Bocchit Edmond, said that while the attackers had disguised themselves as U.S. DEA agents, he believed there was "no way" they really were US agents.

Thus far, a total of 28 foreign mercenaries have been rounded up. Seventeen were detained following a gun battle in Port-au-Prince. Three suspects were killed by police and another eight are still missing.

In an interesting twist to the story, a group of eleven men believed to have been part of the hit squad were arrested after they broke into and hid inside Taiwan’s embassy on the island. After the men were discovered, Taiwanese embassy officials gave permission to the police to enter the premises and take the men into custody.

Police have not yet revealed a motive for the killing.

The U.S. Embassy strongly encourages U.S. citizens who are in country to avail themselves of the opportunity to depart Haiti.

Haitian officials have asked the US to send military troops to the country to help safeguard critical infrastructure and to maintain order.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki on Friday said only that the US plans to send FBI agents and other federal investigators to aid in the probe into President Jovenel Moïse’s murder.

AlertsUSA continues to monitor the domestic and international threat environment around the clock and will immediately notify service subscribers, via SMS messages to their mobile devices, of new alerts, warnings and advisories or any developments which signal a change the overall threat picture for American citizens as events warrant.

Coronavirus Update

July 10, 2021
What You Need To Know

According to data provided by the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, as of Friday evening there have been more than 606,000 total deaths in the U.S. attributed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

According to data provided by the HHS / CDC / ASPR Community Profile Report, total new deaths in the U.S. over the last 7 days were down to 1,075, which is a decrease of more than 25% from the previous 7 day period.

The CDC still requires all air passengers entering the United States (including U.S. citizens and Legal Permanent Residents) to present a negative COVID-19 test, taken within three calendar days of departure, or proof of recovery from the virus within the last 90 days.

The CDC still requires the wearing of face masks while on conveyances and at transportation hubs.

The Department of Homeland Security has extended the restrictions on non-essential cross-border LAND travel with Canada and Mexico through July 21.

CANADA

Active case numbers continue to decline across the country. In addition, pandemic restrictions on travel between Canada and the U.S. began to loosen on Monday of this week. Canadian citizens and permanent residents who have had a full dose of a coronavirus vaccine approved for use in Canada can skip a 14-day quarantine that has been a requirement since March 2020. Eligible air travelers also no longer have to spend their first three days in the country at a government-approved hotel.

Restrictions barring all nonessential trips between Canada and the United States, including tourism, will remain in place until at least July 21.

LATIN AMERICA

In Latin America and the Caribbean, Brazil leads the world in the daily average number of new infections reported, accounting for one in every 9 infections reported worldwide. Also this week, Mexico reported their highest number of new infections since February.

Of every 100 infections reported around the world, about 26 are coming from countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Countries in the region reporting the most deaths from the virus are Brazil, Columbia, Argentina, Peru, and Mexico.

DoD Warns Of An “Increased Potential” For Nuclear Conflict

The possibility that nuclear weapons could be used in regional or global conflicts is growing, said a newly disclosed Pentagon doctrinal publication on nuclear war fighting that was updated last year.

“Despite concerted US efforts to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in international affairs and to negotiate reductions in the number of nuclear weapons, since 2010 no potential adversary has reduced either the role of nuclear weapons in its national security strategy or the number of nuclear weapons it fields. Rather, they have moved decidedly in the opposite direction,” the Department of Defense document said.

“As a result, there is an increased potential for regional conflicts involving nuclear-armed adversaries in several parts of the world and the potential for adversary nuclear escalation in crisis or conflict.”

The publication presents an overview of U.S. nuclear strategy, force structure, targeting and operations.

Xi Is Mobilizing China for War, Possibly With Nukes

China in recent weeks has sent tens of thousands of troops to its disputed border with India in Ladakh, high in the Himalayas.

Beijing looks as if it is preparing for a full-scale invasion of Indian territory.

This deployment occurred while Chinese ruler Xi Jinping, in the words of the Communist Party's China Daily, made a "pro-peace, pro-development, and pro-cooperation speech" to celebrate the centennial of the Party's founding.

Putin Is Testing Biden’s Cyber Resolve

Less than a month after U.S. President Joe Biden warned Russian President Vladimir Putin at their first summit meeting in Geneva that there would be “consequences” for future cyberattacks, the Russian leader appears to be testing Biden’s resolve with a fresh series of attacks reportedly emanating from Russia. Most recently, these include attacks against a Republican National Committee contractor and Kaseya, U.S. information technology firm.
