On Wednesday of this week AlertsUSA subscribers were notified of efforts to secure downtown Akron, OH as state attorneys present evidence to a grand jury to decide whether to indict any of eight Akron police officers involved in the June, 2022 death of Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old black male who was shot 46 times following a high-speed car chase and foot pursuit. Seven of the eight officers involved are white.
Akron police officers attempted to pull over Walker after an alleged traffic violation, giving pursuit when Walker failed to stop. During the chase on a nearby freeway, then surface streets, police reported a firearm being discharged from the suspect vehicle. Walker eventually slowed and exited the moving automobile from the passenger-side door wearing a ski mask.
After a brief foot chase and unsuccessful use of a stun gun, Walker suddenly stopped and turned towards the officers. According to an initial statement issued by the Akron Police Dept on Facebook, the suspect's actions "caused the officers to perceive he posed a deadly threat to them. In response to this threat, officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect."
Now that the gears of the legal system are beginning to turn, downtown Akron businesses have been boarding up windows and entryways in anticipation of civil unrest. Fencing has been installed around the Stubbs Justice Center / Akron Police Dept. and the Summit County Courthouse. Public access to numerous government buildings has been suspended until further notice.
Locals are cautioned that the standard cross-section of left-wing agitators, to include BLM and Antifa, have begun arriving in town.
The June 2022 Jayland Walker incident initially resulted in weeks of protests, deployment of state troopers for riot control, and significant damage to the downtown area.
Akron also experienced multiple rounds of protests and violence following the 2020 George Floyd incident in Minneapolis.
Caution is urged in Akron in the coming days. Depending on the level of mainstream media pumping the grand jury's decision receives, there is the potential for protests to pop up in other cities.
