“NATO reinforcements started to arrive in Kosovo on Monday (5 June 2023), following the unprovoked and unacceptable violence which left 30 KFOR peacekeeping troops injured in clashes last week. Around 500 Turkish service members from Türkiye’s 65th mechanized infantry brigade will make up the bulk of the NATO reinforcements.”
“NATO has been leading a peacekeeping operation in Kosovo since 1999 in support of international efforts to build stability in the region. KFOR’s mission is to maintain a safe and secure environment and freedom of movement for all communities living in Kosovo, in accordance with its mandate under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244. KFOR currently consists of over 4,200 troops contributed by 27 NATO Allies and partners.”
[ Editor’s Note: We covered this topic briefly in the past weekend’s Threat Journal podcast. Readers should familiarize themselves with the geography of the region as it will be increasingly in the news… For a sense of scale, at their closest points, Kosovo is less than 400 miles from Ukraine with at least one NATO member state in between. For more than a year, NATO has been HEAVILY bulking up forces across the eastern flank of the alliance in response to Russia’s invasion. Does anyone not see this new conflict expanding? There are those parties who would love to see NATO and Serbia go at it.
